Pilates is a well-established form of exercise that focuses on core strength, posture, flexibility, and controlled movement. At The Physio Studio, we use these principles to help improve the way the body moves, reduce unnecessary strain on joints, and support better overall function in day-to-day life.

We use the Stott Pilates method, which has been developed using modern exercise science, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation principles. This makes it a primary choice not only for general fitness but also for those transitioning from a physiotherapy treatment plan to a more structured and guided approach to movement in a clinic-based setting.

By strengthening the muscles that support the spine, pelvis, and major joints, our classes help improve body awareness, stability, and movement control. It is often the recommended next step for patients who have used dry needling for back pain or neck stiffness to release tension and are now ready to build long-term structural support.

Why Choose Pilates at The Physio Studio

Pilates at The Physio Studio is different from a general class because it is delivered in a clinical setting and based on controlled, progressive movement. The emphasis is not simply on making exercises harder; it is on helping you move well, build strength properly, and get lasting benefit from the work you do.

Our approach suits people who want more than a standard studio class. While some join to improve general flexibility, many of our clients are managing recovery. For instance, after resolving acute symptoms with physio for neck pain, a patient may use our classes to correct the postural habits that caused the pain initially. In all cases, the focus stays on the quality of movement and musculoskeletal physiotherapy principles rather than speed or intensity alone.

Specialised Pilates Classes Within the Clinic

We currently offer a range of specialised classes, each designed for different life stages and fitness levels.

Beginners Pilates

Our beginners pilates course provides a clear starting point for people who want to learn the basics properly. This is a 10-week course that includes a one-hour, one-to-one assessment. During this session, your posture is analysed, and the basic principles of physio-led pilates are taught. This ensures you have a strong base before moving on to more advanced work.

Mat Pilates

Our traditional mat pilates classes focus on developing strength, control, and movement quality through floor-based exercises. These classes are ideal for those who understand the core principles and want to progress in a clinic setting where movement quality still matters.

Intermediate Classes

These are drop-in classes for people who have completed the beginner's course. The focus moves on to developing strength, control, and movement quality through more advanced exercises while still keeping the class structured and manageable.

Intermediate classes suit people who already understand the basic principles of Pilates and want to continue progressing in a clinic setting where movement quality still matters.

Pre-Natal Pilates

Offered as a 6-week course, our prenatal pilates classes normally take place during the second or early third trimester. The course concentrates on rebalancing and strengthening the muscles as the body goes through the postural changes relating to pregnancy. It is a supportive, controlled environment designed to keep you active safely.

Pilates for Golfers

This 6 to 8-week course concentrates on increasing core strength and improving spinal flexibility. The aim is to support better rotation through the body and help improve consistency in the golf swing, making it a popular choice for those also utilising sports physiotherapy for performance gains.

What to Expect From Your Class

Pilates classes at The Physio Studio focus on controlled movement rather than speed. The aim is to help you understand how to use the body well, develop stronger core support, and improve how you move both in class and outside of it.

Rather than rushing through repetitions, we emphasise:

  • Breath Control: Using the breath to recruit deep stabilising muscles.
  • Pelvic Placement: Finding a "neutral" position to protect the lower back.
  • Scapular Stability: Reducing tension in the neck and shoulders.
  • Ribcage Placement: Ensuring the spine stays aligned during arm movements.

Over time, this practice supports better posture, improved flexibility, and more efficient movement patterns. It often serves as a vital maintenance tool after a patient has completed a course of trigger point dry needling to address chronic muscle knots.
